Tobias in kritischer Verfassung

Tobias Recovery

Note about this blog:

August 31, 2021

I’m creating this blog to document my experiences surrounding a massive brain bleed that my son, Tobias, suffered in August 2021.  I want to use it to update friends and family on Tobias‘ progress as well as as a way for me to process this difficult situation. I also want to create a record that I can share with Tobias when we get him back from his current sleep.  I am not a writer nor a medical professional. I’m trying to accurately represent the information that the fantastic doctors, nurses and support staff are providing to me and my wife, but I’m sure that I’ll make mistakes.

I don’t know what direction the blog will go nor how long it will be.  Tobias is still in a critical state, and we don’t know if he will survive. He has survived the first critical phase, however, and we are choosing hope over fear.

Sincerely,

Tyler and Katja

Update: It’s now over a week later, and it looks promising that Tobias will survive. If you notice an error or have a question, please leave a comment in the blog. Please do not write anything that identifies people’s full names or the hospital/location where Tobias is being treated. Thanks.

Conversations That Touch the Heart: Tobias’s Connection with the Past

Hello, dear readers of Tobias’s Comeback, 😍

As we navigate the winding paths of life, there are moments that remind us how deeply connected we are to the people who have shaped our journey. For Tobias, one of these moments came in the past few weeks during a heartfelt conversation with his mission president and his wife, the Bentlys. Now retired and enjoying life on their peaceful farm, they spoke with Tobias over the phone, creating an exchange that was equal parts fun, touching, and inspiring.

A Mission Full of Challenges—and Love

As parents, we always wonder how our children are truly doing during their missions (in our case, the Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day saints). Are they happy? Are they safe? Tobias’s mission in Santiago, Chile, was not an easy one. From facing a gun pointed at him just two weeks after arriving in Chile—Santiago—to enduring riots with fires breaking out in stores and ATMs, Tobias’s experiences were marked by challenges while the country became a bit restless. That tested his resolve. The Church did everything in its power to ensure the missionaries’ safety, often requiring them to stay indoors for extended periods. After a moment of normality, COVID-19 started, layering another set of challenges on an already intense situation.

Despite these difficulties, Tobias forged bonds that would last a lifetime. Among the many relationships he built, his connection with his mission president, a man he deeply respected for both his medical profession and his dedication to service, stood out. For three years, the Bentlys provided guidance, love, and strength to their missionaries, including Tobias, who has always admired hardworking and kind individuals. He did not mind people who had humor—the kind of people he could engage with and be himself.

A Conversation Full of Love and Connection

Speaking with the Bentlys was a reminder of the joy and love Tobias experienced during his mission. The conversation, conducted partly in Spanish, was lively and engaging. The Bentlys asked many questions, drawing Tobias out and bringing back memories of his time in Chile. Despite the challenges of short-term memory that Tobias continues to face, their interaction highlighted the depth of the relationships he built and the mutual respect and care they share. Often only we experience the short-term memory challenge unless Tobias starts asking the same questions. 😂 He slowly is aware of his problem but loves about it. As parents, it’s heartwarming to see how much he tries not to worry to much about it and how much he trusts in God. The other day he answered a question with, „God will not leave me in the dust!“ In my head, I responded, „I hope so.“ I spoke out loud: YES, you are right!

Tobias values the connections he has made. He has done the same even as a little boy. Tobias has always been a pretty loyal friend. Since we moved often during our children’s childhood, it took more time for him to connect to people, but when he connected, he got attached to his new friends as a loyal person.

Watching him light up while speaking with the Bentlys was a powerful reminder of the love that binds us to those who walk alongside us during pivotal moments in life. His mission wasn’t just about helping people to find Christ in their lives or helping people to connect to their Father in Heaven again; it was also about enduring hardships, as well as about creating meaningful relationships and touching lives.

Finding Joy in the Small Moments

Life after a brain bleed isn’t always easy. Short-term memory issues, in particular, can be rough. Tobias works hard to relearn and regain what was temporarily lost, and we hold onto hope that this will improve over time. Still, we’ve learned an important lesson: life is about living in the now.

Whether it’s watching Ted Talks about biotechnology and cancer, savoring a delicious dish Tyler cooked, or sharing a laugh over a stuck piece of chicken—these small moments are treasures. Just the other day, Tobias’s newfound sensation on his left side allowed him to feel and try to remove a piece of chicken from between his teeth. It was a little thing, but for us, it was huge. I laughed, kissed him, and said a quiet prayer of gratitude to Heavenly Father.

Life is good, even when it’s not perfect. These moments ground us, reminding us to focus not on what we’ve lost or what’s uncertain in the future, but on the beauty of the present.

The True Spirit of Christmas

As the holiday season approaches, let us remember what truly matters. It’s not the gifts under the tree; it is the people gathered around it. If you’re feeling alone this Christmas, know that you’re not. Tobias and I, along with this incredible community, are with you in spirit. God never leaves us alone. Trials are a part of life, but they’re also an opportunity to grow and to connect with others who might need our help.

So, as you celebrate the season, cherish the moments with loved ones, be present, and remember the joy of giving—not just gifts, but your time, your love, and your support.

Merry Christmas to all, and may the coming year be filled with love, hope, and gratitude for the blessings we have.

With love and faith,

Katja, Tyler and Family

Every Day is a New Beginning: Embracing Renewal Beyond New Year’s Day

As the calendar turns over to a new year, many of us find ourselves reflecting on the past and planning for the future. The concept of a „fresh start“ is often associated with New Year’s Day, a time when we set goals, envision new beginnings, and dream of positive change. But is January 1st the only opportunity for renewal?

The truth is, every day—indeed,
every moment is a chance to begin anew. Life reminds us of this through its many challenges and victories, offering lessons that encourage us to trust, breathe, and have faith.

The Power of a New Day

Each sunrise brings with it the promise of a new beginning, a fresh slate. This idea isn’t confined to the arbitrary turning of a calendar page. Life teaches us, often through its trials, that growth and renewal are continual processes. Tobias, for example, faced pain today—a hard and disheartening experience for both him and those who love him. Pain has a way of clouding hope, but hope is precisely what carries us forward. It’s the light that helps us navigate the shadows, reminding us that pain is temporary and challenges are stepping stones.

The scriptures echo this sentiment beautifully. In the Bible, we find these reassuring words:

„The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.“ (Lamentations 3:22-23)

Every day is a gift. God’s mercies are new with each dawn, offering us opportunities to grow, heal, and trust in His guidance.

Learning to Trust and Breathe

During difficult days, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. But these moments teach us valuable lessons about patience and resilience. Tobias finds relief through relaxation and medication, tools that remind us of the importance of care and intention in overcoming adversity. For me, learning to breathe—literally and metaphorically—has been essential. Deep breaths help ground me in the present, while trust anchors me to the hope of better days ahead.

The Book of Mormon offers this encouraging scripture:

„Therefore, ye must press forward with a steadfastness in Christ, having a perfect brightness of hope, and a love of God and of all men. Wherefore, if ye shall press forward, feasting upon the word of Christ, and endure to the end, behold, thus saith the Father: Ye shall have eternal life.“ (2 Nephi 31:20)

Hope is an active practice, one that requires perseverance and faith. By trusting in God’s plan and relying on the strength He provides, we can endure trials with grace and purpose.

Small Steps, Big Change

The idea of starting anew applies not only to our mindset but also to the actions we take. Every goal, no matter how grand, begins with small steps. For Tobias, the desire to walk has inspired a new exercise regimen focused on daily squats. These exercises strengthen the muscles he’ll need to stand and move independently. This effort embodies the principle that progress is built incrementally—20 squats lead to 40, then 60, and so on. Each small success brings him closer to his goal.

Similarly, I’ve decided to resume running. Starting with short distances like 1 kilometer, I’ll gradually build endurance and reclaim a practice that brings me joy and health. These small, intentional steps serve as reminders that transformation doesn’t happen overnight. It’s the steady, persistent effort that leads to meaningful change.

Expanding Horizons Through Learning

These programs symbolize our commitment to intellectual growth and perseverance. For Tobias, this journey is particularly meaningful as he works to practice learning again. Since his brain bleed in August of 2021, we’ve needed to start at a lower level, focusing on foundational concepts that will help him rebuild the skills and knowledge he once had. Whether tackling a challenging algebra problem or exploring the basics of biology, each lesson is a step forward, strengthening his capacity to face life’s complexities with confidence and hope for continued growth.

A Shift in Perspective

Society places great importance on dates and milestones, but in truth, a date is just a number—a tool that helps us organize our lives. The real magic lies in the decisions we make each day. Our lives are unwritten stories, filled with potential for joy, growth, and purpose. By focusing on what we can improve or change today, we shape the narrative of our tomorrow.

For Tobias, that narrative includes a revised therapy schedule, a new tool that’s on its way, and our educational initiatives. These steps reflect a commitment to growth and learning, no matter the challenges faced. Similarly, my goals include running and supporting Tobias in his journey. Together, we’re building a life rooted in hope, faith, and action.

The Role of Faith and Creativity

Navigating life’s ups and downs requires a strong foundation of faith and a willingness to embrace creativity. Faith gives us the courage to trust in things we cannot see, while creativity allows us to find solutions and opportunities in unexpected places. When Tobias has difficult days, I lean on both these tools to guide me. Faith reassures me that the pain will pass, and creativity helps me find ways to support him and adapt to new circumstances.

Goals as Guiding Stars

While it’s important to acknowledge the open-ended potential of each day, setting goals provides direction and purpose. Goals act as guiding stars, helping us navigate the vast possibilities of life. They don’t bind us to a single path but instead encourage us to move forward with intention. Whether it’s building physical strength, pursuing education, or cultivating spiritual growth, goals give us something to strive for.

Embracing Tomorrow with Hope

Tomorrow is unwritten—a blank page waiting for the stories we’ll create. By embracing the idea that every day is a fresh start, we free ourselves from the limitations of past mistakes and future uncertainties. We can approach each day with hope, trusting that God’s mercies will renew us and guide us through whatever comes our way.

As we move forward, let us remember the words of Lamentations and 2 Nephi, which remind us of God’s unwavering love and the power of hope. With faith, creativity, and perseverance, we can face challenges, celebrate victories, and make each                                                                                 day a meaningful chapter in the story of our lives.

Thanks for sharing our journey!

Lots of love and best wishes for the new year,

Katja, Tyler and Tobias
