Kratzen, Schmerzen, Stress – Wenn das Nervensystem aus dem Gleichgewicht gerät

Seit zwei Tagen beobachten wir, wie Tobias sich immer wieder stark am Kopf kratzt. Was für Außenstehende vielleicht wie eine kleine, beiläufige Geste aussieht, ist für uns alles andere als harmlos. Tobias signalisiert uns damit: Etwas stimmt nicht. Ich spüre Unruhe. Ich spüre Schmerz.
Aber wo genau und warum – das bleibt oft unklar. Und genau das macht es so belastend.

Sein zentrales Nervensystem scheint in einem Dauer-Alarmzustand zu sein – ein Zustand, den man als „Fight or Flight“ kennt. Tobias ist unruhig, reagiert sensibel auf Reize, kann sich nur schwer entspannen. Und gleichzeitig soll er weiterhin funktionieren – soll zu seinen Therapien, soll mitmachen, soll Leistung bringen.

Ich begleite ihn dabei. Ich sehe seine Unruhe, sein inneres Ringen, spüre seine Anspannung – und merke, wie mich das als Mutter emotional erschöpft.
Während Tyler ruhig bleibt, die Situation einschätzt, liebevoll begleitet – bin ich innerlich in Alarmbereitschaft. Ich denke an das, was kommen könnte. Was passiert, wenn er so zur Therapie muss? Wenn der Zustand sich verschlechtert?

Werden wir jemals wissen was der andere denkt?

„Aber er sieht doch normal aus…“

Das Schwierige: Nach außen hin sieht Tobias oft „okay“ aus.
Er spricht, er isst, er sitzt mit uns am Tisch.
Doch sein Nervensystem spricht eine andere Sprache.

Dieses Kratzen ist nicht einfach ein „Jucken“. Es ist ein Ausdruck innerer Reizüberflutung, von nicht greifbarem Schmerz, vielleicht auch ein Versuch, sich irgendwie zu regulieren – durch Bewegung, durch Druck, durch etwas Spürbares. Für Tobias ist das real. Und für uns, als Menschen an seiner Seite, auch.

🧘‍♀️ Regulation beginnt im Kleinen

Ich habe in den letzten Tagen begonnen, kleine vegetative Übungen mit ihm zu machen – achtsame Berührungen, Atemhilfen, beruhigende Reize. Manchmal helfen sie, manchmal nicht sofort. Es braucht Geduld, viel Feingefühl – und die Fähigkeit, den Moment zu akzeptieren, wie er ist.

Nicht zu wissen, wie lange es anhält, nicht genau greifen zu können, was los ist – das ist eine Herausforderung.
Und gleichzeitig ist es das, was neurologische Verletzungen mit sich bringen: Unvorhersehbarkeit. Nichtwissen. Loslassen.

🌿 Zwischen Überforderung und Vertrauen

Ich frage mich oft: Warum reagiere ich so stark? Warum geht es Tyler leichter von der Hand?

Vielleicht, weil ich mehr in der Verantwortung stehe, ihn zu organisieren, Termine zu koordinieren, „funktionierende Tage“ zu ermöglichen. Vielleicht, weil ich mich innerlich verantwortlich fühle, ihn durch diese Zeit zu bringen. Und manchmal auch, weil ich einfach müde bin.

Aber dann sehe ich Tobias, wie er – trotz Unwohlsein – zur Therapie geht, sein Fleisch isst, sich in den Moment zurückholt, seine Serie schaut. Er lebt im Jetzt, auch wenn sein Körper manchmal aus dem Takt ist.

🙂 Was mir hilft (  oder nicht immer 🙁   )

In solchen Momenten hilft mir nicht die perfekte Lösung – sondern ein Gedanke, ein Gebet, ein Satz, der mich erdet. In den letzten Tagen begleitet mich dieser Vers:

„Gott hat uns nicht den Geist der Furcht gegeben, sondern der Kraft, der Liebe und der Besonnenheit.“
– 2. Timotheus 1,7

Ich atme tief. Ich bin da. Ich begleite. Ich muss nicht die volle Verantwortung tragen. Das Universum steht mit seiner unsichtbaren Hilfe an unserer Seite. 
Und Tobias – ist da, wie er ist. Mit all seinen Herausforderungen und Bedürfnissen FÜR Andere – und dann sich selbst. 
Nichts ist unbedingt planbar. Nichts ist immer klar und verständlich. Aber echt. Und mutig. Und Tobias ist mein Sohn.

Wir sind für genau diese Zeiten gemacht

Es gibt Zeiten im Leben, in denen der Boden unter unseren Füßen zu schwanken scheint. Wir verlieren Menschen, Fähigkeiten, Sicherheit – und mit ihnen oft das Gefühl der Kontrolle. Doch vielleicht, so wie Kaira Jewel Lingo (Sister Châu Nghiêm) es lehrt, sind gerade diese Momente keine Unterbrechung unseres Weges, sondern die Essenz davon.

Wir sind nicht hier, trotz der Stürme,
sondern wegen ihnen.

Wenn wir im Hier und Jetzt verweilen – mit allem, was ist, ohne zu fliehen – beginnen wir zu spüren, dass das Leben uns nie verlassen hat. Es pulsiert in jeder Erfahrung, auch im Schmerz. „Mit ihren Schwingungen im Jetzt leben“ bedeutet, die Wellen nicht zu bekämpfen, sondern zu lernen, auf ihnen zu gleiten.

Der Buddha sagte:

„Friede kommt von innen. Suche ihn nicht im Außen.“

Und im Buch Mormon lesen wir eine tiefe Wahrheit, die uns an die göttliche Absicht in allem erinnert (Kirche Jesu Christi der Heiligen der Letzten Tage):

„Denn es muss ein Gegensatz in allen Dingen sein.“ – 2 Nephi 2:11

Dieser Gegensatz – Freude und Leid, Licht und Dunkel, Stille und Sturm – ist das, was uns lebendig macht. Wenn wir den Widerstand loslassen, finden wir Frieden mitten im Chaos.

Auch Christus sprach:

„In der Welt habt ihr Bedrängnis; aber seid getrost, ich habe die Welt überwunden.“ – Johannes 16:33

Wir sind für genau diese Zeiten gemacht. Nicht, weil sie leicht sind, sondern weil sie uns lehren, tiefer zu lieben, stiller zu glauben und bewusster zu leben.

🌗 Das Licht und der Gegensatz

In dieser Welt gibt es Gegensätze – Gut und Böse, Licht und Finsternis.
Doch das Licht ist immer stärker. Die Dunkelheit kann das Licht nicht ertragen; sie kämpft dagegen, weil sie sich im Licht auflöst.

Wenn wir uns mit Licht füllen – mit Güte, Geduld, Vergebung und Liebe – hat die Dunkelheit keinen Raum in uns.
Was ist Licht?
Es ist alles Gute, das wir im Stillen tun: ein freundliches Wort, ein aufmerksames Zuhören, das Bemühen um Verständnis. Es ist das tägliche Sich-Erheben, auch wenn niemand es sieht.

Als Christ lese ich die Bibel und das Buch Mormon. Vielleicht liest du andere heilige Schriften – doch wenn sie dich lehren, den Menschen zu achten, gleich welcher Herkunft, welchen Glaubens oder welcher Ethik, wenn sie dich erinnern, deine Segnungen als Geschenke zu betrachten und deinen Nächsten zu lieben wie dich selbst – dann lebst du im Licht.

Das Licht wächst nur, wenn wir es üben.
Hass, Frustration, Ablehnung und Gewalt ersticken es – und die Finsternis freut sich daran.
Doch der Mensch ist im Ursprung gut.
Und jedes Mal, wenn du Liebe wählst statt Groll, Mitgefühl statt Urteil, wird das Licht stärker – in dir und in der Welt.

Vielleicht ist genau das die wahre Berufung unserer Zeit:
Licht zu sein, dort, wo Dunkel herrscht.

Unser Weg mit Neuroplastizität – und wie wir UNSER Gehirn fit halten können

 

Viele von euch begleiten uns seit August 2021, als Tobias’ Leben durch eine massive Hirnblutung völlig auf den Kopf gestellt wurde. Damals war „Neuroplastizität“ für uns nur ein Fremdwort – heute ist sie unser Anker. Forschungen zeigen, dass die Sprache vor allem in der linken Hirnhälfte angesiedelt ist, während die rechte Hemisphäre für die Raumwahrnehmung zuständig ist. Dieses Wissen hat uns geholfen, Tobias’ Rehabilitation gezielt zu unterstützen.

Tobias’ rechte Hemisphäre im Fokus

Der Schaden in Tobias’ rechter Stirnlappe führte zu linksseitigem Neglect und Wahrnehmungsproblemen. Musiktherapie spielte eine Schlüsselrolle: In Fallstudien verbe

sserte sich ein Patient nach 18 Monaten musikalischer Neglect‑Therapie so, dass er in Tests nur noch 4 von 40 Linien übersah. Die Idee dahinter: Musik aktiviert Aufmerksamkeitsnetzwerke und zieht den Fokus auf die vernachlässigte Seite. Auch Tobias reagierte positiv auf rhythmische Signale – sie halfen ihm, seine linke Seite wieder besser wahrzunehmen. 

Sprachtraining für die linke Hemisphäre

Aphasie ist bei linksseitigen Läsionen häufig. Studien zeigen, dass gezielte Sprachübungen, etwa mit Apps wie VoiceAdapt, die Wortfindung und die Lebensqualität verbessern. In einer anderen Studie erzielte die Kombination aus transkranieller Gleichstromstimulation und klassischer Sprachtherapie die größten Erfolge. Auch diese Erkenntnisse haben wir in Tobias’ Therapie integriert: tägliche Sprachübungen, Satzwiederholungen und das Benennen von Bildern sind fester Bestandteil unseres Alltags.

Gemeinsam trainieren – für ein scharfes Gehirn

Unser Weg hat uns gelehrt: Das Gehirn bleibt formbar, wenn wir es fordern. Egal ob nach einer Verletzung oder präventiv – regelmäßiges Training hält den Kopf fit. Kurze Einheiten (z. B. 20 Minuten täglich) mit Kombination aus Sprache, Musik, visuellen Aufgaben und Bewegung fördern die Vernetzung.

Daher meine Einladung an euch:

  • Nutzt Musik, Sprache und Bewegung – egal ob ihr gesund seid oder euch von etwas erholt.

  • Bleibt neugierig – lernt neue Wörter, löst Rätsel, probiert ein Instrument aus.

  • Teilt eure Erfahrungen – wir sind nicht allein auf diesem Weg.

Tobias ist der lebende Beweis dafür, dass sich Einsatz lohnt. Lasst uns gemeinsam trainieren und unsere Gehirne scharf halten!

Lernen, mit dem Herzen zu hören wenn die Kommunikation fehlt

Wenn Menschen zur Black Box werden – und wie wir lernen, mit dem Herzen zu hören

Als ich an der Uni war und Bildungswissenschaft dtudierte, lernte ich das Konzept der „Black Box“ kennen. Hier eine kleine Definition:

„Der Radikale Konstruktivismus ist eine Position der Erkenntnistheorie, die sich deutlich von anderen Konstruktivismen unterscheidet.

Eine der Grundannahmen des radikalen Konstruktivismus ist, dass die persönliche Wahrnehmung nicht das Abbild einer Realität produzieren kann, welche unabhängig vom Individuum besteht, sondern dass Realität für jedes Individuum immer nur eine Konstruktion seiner eigenen Sinnesreize und seiner Gedächtnisleistung bedeutet. Deshalb ist Objektivität im Sinne einer Übereinstimmung von wahrgenommenem (konstruiertem) Bild und Realität unmöglich; jede Wahrnehmung ist vollständig subjektiv. Darin besteht die Radikalität (Kompromisslosigkeit) des radikalen Konstruktivismus.“

In letzter Zeit begegne ich vielen Menschen, die sichtbar und spürbar Ärger, Trauer oder Frustration in sich tragen. Manchmal verstecken sie es hinter einem Lächeln, manchmal bricht es in einem unbedachten Satz hervor. Doch immer ist da etwas in der Luft – eine Spannung, eine Energie, die mehr sagt als jedes Wort.

Und ich merke: Ich weiß oft nicht, wie ich in solch einer Atmosphäre richtig kommunizieren soll. Worte prallen ab, Missverständnisse entstehen, und plötzlich steht da eine unsichtbare Mauer zwischen Herz und Herz.

Ich erinnere mich dabei an Tobias’ erste Jahre nach seiner Hirnblutung.
Er war wie eine Black Box – ein Mensch voller Leben, Gedanken, Erinnerungen, aber ohne Möglichkeit, sie mitzuteilen. Wir wussten, dass er fühlte, dass er verstand, dass er irgendwo in diesem stillen Raum zwischen Bewusstsein und Ausdruck kämpfte. Aber wir hatten keinen Zugang.
Es waren Jahre des Aushaltens, des Hoffens und des Betens.

Heute ist das anders. Tobias kann sprechen – und jedes Wort, das aus seinem Mund kommt, ist wie ein Sonnenstrahl nach langer Nacht.
Er erzählt mir, wie er sich fühlt, wie das Essen schmeckt, wie sehr er seine Familie liebt.
Er ist kein Rätsel mehr – er ist ein offenes Buch, und das ist ein Geschenk.
Ich erfahre jeden Tag, wie viel Liebe in ihm wohnt, wie sensibel und dankbar er ist. Diese Offenheit ist Heilung – für ihn und für uns alle.

Doch nicht jeder Mensch kann so sprechen wie Tobias heute. Viele tragen ihre Black Box noch verschlossen in sich. Und doch – auch wenn wir nicht in ihre Köpfe sehen können, spüren wir die Energie ihrer Gedanken.
Wir fühlen, wenn jemand traurig ist, auch ohne Worte. Wir merken, wenn jemand uns innerlich ablehnt oder liebt.
Das menschliche Miteinander geschieht nicht nur durch Sprache – es geschieht durch Geist und Seele.

Das Verständnis der Welt – und des Menschen – hängt immer davon ab, wie wir beobachten und interpretieren.
Es gibt die Realität, das Messbare: „Dieser Schuh hat Größe 41.“
Und es gibt die Wirklichkeit, das Erlebte: „Dieser Schuh ist unbequem“ oder „Ich fühle mich sicher darin.“
Wir leben also nicht in der Realität allein – sondern in unserer gedeuteten Wirklichkeit. Und die entsteht im Herzen.

Genau hier setzt der Gedanke der persönlichen Black Box an.
In der Luftfahrt speichert sie alle Daten der letzten Minuten vor einem Unglück.
Übertragen auf das Leben heißt das: Wir alle haben eine innere Black Box, in der unsere Gedanken, Erwartungen, Ängste und Entscheidungen aufgezeichnet sind.

hauen und verstehen: Was hat mich angetrieben? Wo habe ich falsch abgebogen? Was wollte ich eigentlich erreichen?

Ich habe begonnen, das auch praktisch zu leben.
Vor schwierigen Gesprächen oder Begegnungen schreibe ich auf, was ich erwarte – in einer Farbe.
Nach dem Gespräch notiere ich, was wirklich passiert ist – in einer anderen.
Dann vergleiche ich beides, markiere Unterschiede und schreibe am Ende, was ich daraus gelernt habe.
Ein kleiner 4-Farben-Prozess, der Großes bewirken kann: Bewusstsein. Wahrheit. Veränderung.

Diese Methode verbindet Feedback (Rückblick) mit Feedforward (Vorausschau).
Sie hilft mir, meine Reaktionen nicht zu verurteilen, sondern zu verstehen – und meinen Weg bewusst fortzusetzen.
Sie erinnert mich daran, dass Gott uns nicht durch Perfektion führt, sondern durch Einsicht und Liebe.
Jede Erkenntnis – ob schmerzhaft oder schön – ist Teil unseres geistigen Wachstums.

Vielleicht ist das auch die Antwort auf die angespannte Stimmung, die ich in so vielen Begegnungen spüre:
Wir müssen nicht alles verstehen, was im Anderen vorgeht.
Aber wir können mit offenem Herzen lauschen, fühlen, beten – und still fragen:

„Herr, lehre mich, in dieser Situation Dein Werkzeug des Friedens zu sein.“

Denn am Ende geht es nicht darum, jede Black Box zu öffnen –
sondern darum, mit Liebe und Geduld zu warten, bis sie sich selbst öffnet.

Wie Bewegung und Vitamine Tobias auf seinem Weg unterstützen

Fitness und Gehirngesundheit eine Kunst fuer sich! ♥


Ich möchte heute von meinen Erfahrungen mit Tobias berichten. Tobias hatte wie Ihr inzwischen ja alle wisst, eine Hirnschädigung. Ich begleite ihn auf seinem Weg der Heilung seit August 2021 mit meinem lieben Mann Tyler.

Mir ist wichtig zu sagen: Alles, was ich hier beschreibe, basiert auf meinen Beobachtungen und Recherchen. Jeder Mensch ist anders, und was Tobias hilft, muss nicht für alle passen. Bitte besprecht jede neue Idee immer zuerst mit eurem Arzt!

Bewegung – ein kleiner Schritt, große Wirkung

Als Tobias mit Bewegung begann, habe ich schnell gemerkt, wie gut es ihm tut. Schon kleine Spaziergänge oder einfache Gymnastik-Übungen haben einen Unterschied gemacht: 
– Tobias wurde wacher und konzentrierter. 
– Seine Stimmung wurde oft besser, manchmal sogar fröhlich. 
– Er hatte das Gefühl, wieder mehr Kontrolle über seinen Körper und Kopf zu bekommen.

Was haben wir aus dieser Erfahrung gelernt: Es muss kein Leistungssport sein. Wichtig ist, dass Bewegung regelmäßig passiert – auch zehn Minuten am Tag können viel bewirken.


Neuroplastizität – das Gehirn lernt neu

Durch meine Recherchen habe ich den Begriff Neuroplastizität kennengelernt. Das bedeutet, dass das Gehirn neue Wege finden und sich anpassen kann, auch wenn ein Teil geschädigt ist. Bei Tobias habe ich gesehen: 
– Mit viel Geduld und Übung konnte er Fähigkeiten zurückgewinnen, die verloren schienen. 
– Besonders hilfreich war es, wenn wir gemeinsam kleine Ziele gesetzt haben und diese Schritt für Schritt geübt haben.

Das hat Tobias Mut gemacht und ihm gezeigt, dass Veränderung möglich ist.


Neurogenese – neue Nervenzellen entstehen

Ein weiteres spannendes Thema ist die Neurogenese: Das Gehirn kann auch im Erwachsenenalter neue Nervenzellen bilden, vor allem im Bereich für Lernen und Erinnern. Ich habe gelesen, dass Bewegung und geistige Aktivität diesen Prozess unterstützen können. Deshalb versuchen wir, immer wieder Neues auszuprobieren und den Alltag abwechslungsreich zu gestalten.


Vitamine D und B12 – unsere kleinen Helfer fürs Gehirn

Bei meiner Recherche bin ich immer wieder auf die Bedeutung von Vitamin D und Vitamin B12 gestoßen: 
– Vitamin D bekommt man durch Sonnenlicht und einige Lebensmittel wie Fisch oder Eier. Es unterstützt die Nervenzellen. 
– Vitamin B12 steckt vor allem in tierischen Lebensmitteln und ist wichtig für die Bildung neuer Nervenzellen.

Wir haben mit dem Arzt besprochen, ob Tobias genug von diesen Vitaminen bekommt. Nach einer Blutuntersuchung konnten wir gezielt darauf achten, dass er gut versorgt ist. Ich habe beobachtet, dass Tobias dadurch oft wacher und klarer im Kopf war.


Mein Fazit

Tobias’ Weg zeigt mir: 
– Bewegung, auch im kleinen Rahmen, kann viel bewirken. 
– Das Gehirn hat die Fähigkeit, sich zu verändern und zu heilen. 
– Vitamine wie D und B12 spielen eine wichtige Rolle für die Gehirngesundheit.

Jeder Mensch ist einzigartig. Was Tobias hilft, kann für andere anders aussehen. Deshalb: Bitte besprecht jede neue Maßnahme immer zuerst mit eurem Arzt.

Ich hoffe, diese Einblicke machen Mut und geben Inspiration für den eigenen Weg!

Welchen Stimmen zuhören?

Den falschen Stimmen zuhören – und den richtigen vertrauen

Wir leben in einer Zeit, in der wir von Meinungen umgeben sind.
Soziale Medien, Nachrichten und sogar wohlmeinende Freunde überfluten uns täglich mit widersprüchlichen Ratschlägen. Besonders in Gesundheitsfragen verstärken digitale Plattformen oft extreme Stimmen, die Entscheidungen eher auf Emotionen als auf Vernunft stützen. Es ist leicht, den Blick für das Wesentliche zu verlieren, wenn dramatische Geschichten und vermeintlich schnelle Lösungen locken.

Als pflegende Angehörige waren mein Mann und ich oft hin- und hergerissen. Freunde erzählten von Wundern, Therapeuten schlugen neue Wege vor, und in Online-Foren wimmelte es von „Lösungen“. Doch während all dieser Geräusche sahen wir Tobias. Wir sahen ihn kämpfen – mit Erschöpfung, mit den verengten „Verkehrswegen“ in seinem Gehirn. Und wir sahen seine stillen Siege, die niemand sonst bemerkte.
Seine Wahrnehmung ist heute geschärfter, sein Humor spritziger, und er äußert seine Wünsche klar. Diese inneren Fortschritte sind ebenso wertvoll wie die sichtbaren Erfolge, auf die wir früher fixiert waren.

Mit der Zeit haben wir gelernt, auf unser Gefühl zu hören. Ja, wir nehmen den Rat der Therapeuten ernst und hören aufmerksam auf Stimmen aus unserem Umfeld. Aber wir filtern sie durch das, was wir über Tobias wissen – und durch das, was unser Herz uns sagt. Manchmal braucht er schlicht mehr Ruhe. Manchmal passt eine neue Übung perfekt zu ihm – manchmal aber auch nicht. Diese Entscheidungen erfordern Geduld.

Geduld ist nichts Passives. Sie ist eine bewusste Entscheidung, innezuhalten, zu atmen, zu vertrauen. Ich habe gelernt, dass Gott sieht, was wir nicht sehen. Und wenn wir die falschen Stimmen leiser drehen und den kleinen, treuen Schritten Raum geben, wächst in uns eine Hoffnung, die stärker ist als jeder Zweifel.

Heute, vier Jahre nach diesem einschneidenden Erlebnis, sehe ich jede Form von Manipulation von außen kritischer. Wie oft glauben wir, die Lösung für ein Problem gefunden zu haben, oder wir vertrauen jemandem ein Geheimnis an – in der Hoffnung, dort Sicherheit zu finden. Das ist menschlich und auch in Ordnung. Aber eines habe ich verstanden: Auch ohne Glaskugel hat jeder von uns ein Geschenk – einen inneren Kompass.

Für mich ist dieser stille Begleiter unersetzlich. Er hat mich als Mutter, als pflegende Angehörige, als Schwester, Tochter, Lerntherapeutin und Großmutter schon oft geleitet. Tobias hat es verdient, dass ich diese Verbindung zwischen Himmel und Erde pflege. Meditation ist dabei ein wunderbares Werkzeug für mich geworden – ein Moment, in dem ich zur Ruhe komme und wieder klarer hören kann, was wirklich wichtig ist.

„Seid fröhlich in Hoffnung, geduldig in Trübsal, beharrlich im Gebet.“

I have been doing a lot of thinking lately about what Tobias says and his attitude toward his and our new life. This blog entry was inspired by the phrase, It’s just not fair what happened to Tobias‘ life. 

🌍 Life Isn’t Fair—But Life Is Still Beautiful

Why does life seem unfair?

We see and hear about war. We live among children, young adults, and elderly people with severe health issues. Many of us struggle with mental illness or physical pain. Life can feel heavy and full of suffering.

And yet — in the middle of all this — the world we live in is beautiful.

Nature teaches us the cycle of life: blooming, slowing down, and dying. It is a quiet teacher, showing us that everything has its season.

The universe gave us Earth — a place to live, learn from, take care of, and live off. In response, we humans created ideas to make sense of it all. One of those ideas is fairness.

What is fairness?

According to the dictionary:

“Fairness is the quality of treating people equally or in a way that is right or reasonable.”

But since the beginning of our species, we’ve treated people differently. That’s why terms like racism and injustice exist.

People often say about Tobias:

“It’s not fair what happened to him.”
And they’re right — from a human perspective, it’s not.

But is it fair that

  • People in Gaza, Israel, or Syria are killed or displaced…

  • People in Ukraine or Russia die in war …

  • Families in parts of Africa go hungry, are tortured, or are
    killed …

  • Babies and children suffer?

  • Young fathers and mothers receive a cancer diagnosis?

  • People lose their jobs and slip into poverty?

We could go on and on — and so could you.

Life is life. Fairness is… a strange word.

If you believe that life has a purpose, then ask yourself:
What is that purpose?

Here’s one possibility:
To be a good person. To recognize the true values of life. To discover who we are.

When we truly know ourselves, we see that anyone — regardless of skin color, belief system, or background — could be our friend.
Even our best friend.

In times of war, leaders convince us we have enemies.
But really, the leaders are the ones in conflict.
The people? They just want to live in peace and harmony.

We all want happiness, freedom, and peace. Sadly, that time hasn’t fully arrived. If there is a God with a purpose for us, there is also a devil who tries hard to get in the way of that. 

Tobias and the journey of learning

I wish we had taken Tobias to the doctor before he went back to the U.S.
He didn’t recognize the signs — and neither did we.
His headache was light, but it was always there.
And we ignored it.

We had to learn not to drown in self-pity or guilt.
Not to blame God or the universe.
We had to fall — and learn to rise again.
Over and over.

Tobias is still fighting, and he’s grateful for his Father in Heaven.
His words are simple and strong:

“He has a plan for me.”

Final Thoughts: A Personal Invitation

Fairness is a concept we created — it’s not built into the fabric of life.
But peace, gratitude, love, and purpose? Those are real.

Let’s find peace, even in struggle.
Let’s support others. First take care of yourself so that you can serve others. 
Let’s use our strength and live with meaning.

The purpose of life is not to fight.
Not to hate.
Not to be brainwashed.

Tobias teaches me every day what joy looks like — and that there’s more to life than meets the eye.

Conversations That Touch the Heart: Tobias’s Connection with the Past

Hello, dear readers of Tobias’s Comeback, 😍

As we navigate the winding paths of life, there are moments that remind us how deeply connected we are to the people who have shaped our journey. For Tobias, one of these moments came in the past few weeks during a heartfelt conversation with his mission president and his wife, the Bentlys. Now retired and enjoying life on their peaceful farm, they spoke with Tobias over the phone, creating an exchange that was equal parts fun, touching, and inspiring.

A Mission Full of Challenges—and Love

As parents, we always wonder how our children are truly doing during their missions (in our case, the Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day saints). Are they happy? Are they safe? Tobias’s mission in Santiago, Chile, was not an easy one. From facing a gun pointed at him just two weeks after arriving in Chile—Santiago—to enduring riots with fires breaking out in stores and ATMs, Tobias’s experiences were marked by challenges while the country became a bit restless. That tested his resolve. The Church did everything in its power to ensure the missionaries’ safety, often requiring them to stay indoors for extended periods. After a moment of normality, COVID-19 started, layering another set of challenges on an already intense situation.

Despite these difficulties, Tobias forged bonds that would last a lifetime. Among the many relationships he built, his connection with his mission president, a man he deeply respected for both his medical profession and his dedication to service, stood out. For three years, the Bentlys provided guidance, love, and strength to their missionaries, including Tobias, who has always admired hardworking and kind individuals. He did not mind people who had humor—the kind of people he could engage with and be himself. 

A Conversation Full of Love and Connection

Speaking with the Bentlys was a reminder of the joy and love Tobias experienced during his mission. The conversation, conducted partly in Spanish, was lively and engaging. The Bentlys asked many questions, drawing Tobias out and bringing back memories of his time in Chile. Despite the challenges of short-term memory that Tobias continues to face, their interaction highlighted the depth of the relationships he built and the mutual respect and care they share. Often only we experience the short-term memory challenge unless Tobias starts asking the same questions. 😂 He slowly is aware of his problem but loves about it. As parents, it’s heartwarming to see how much he tries not to worry to much about it and how much he trusts in God. The other day he answered a question with, „God will not leave me in the dust!“ In my head, I responded, „I hope so.“ I spoke out loud: YES, you are right!

 

Tobias values the connections he has made. He has done the same even as a little boy. Tobias has always been a pretty loyal friend. Since we moved often during our children’s childhood, it took more time for him to connect to people, but when he connected, he got attached to his new friends as a loyal person. 

Watching him light up while speaking with the Bentlys was a powerful reminder of the love that binds us to those who walk alongside us during pivotal moments in life. His mission wasn’t just about helping people to find Christ in their lives or helping people to connect to their Father in Heaven again; it was also about enduring hardships, as well as about creating meaningful relationships and touching lives. 

Finding Joy in the Small Moments

Life after a brain bleed isn’t always easy. Short-term memory issues, in particular, can be rough. Tobias works hard to relearn and regain what was temporarily lost, and we hold onto hope that this will improve over time. Still, we’ve learned an important lesson: life is about living in the now.

Whether it’s watching Ted Talks about biotechnology and cancer, savoring a delicious dish Tyler cooked, or sharing a laugh over a stuck piece of chicken—these small moments are treasures. Just the other day, Tobias’s newfound sensation on his left side allowed him to feel and try to remove a piece of chicken from between his teeth. It was a little thing, but for us, it was huge. I laughed, kissed him, and said a quiet prayer of gratitude to Heavenly Father.

Life is good, even when it’s not perfect. These moments ground us, reminding us to focus not on what we’ve lost or what’s uncertain in the future, but on the beauty of the present.

The True Spirit of Christmas

As the holiday season approaches, let us remember what truly matters. It’s not the gifts under the tree; it is the people gathered around it. If you’re feeling alone this Christmas, know that you’re not. Tobias and I, along with this incredible community, are with you in spirit. God never leaves us alone. Trials are a part of life, but they’re also an opportunity to grow and to connect with others who might need our help.

So, as you celebrate the season, cherish the moments with loved ones, be present, and remember the joy of giving—not just gifts, but your time, your love, and your support.

Creating a Balanced Routine for Brain Injury Recovery: A Day in Tobias’s Life
 
Every day with Tobias is a journey of growth, adaptation, and perseverance. Since his brain injury, we’ve worked together to establish a routine that balances therapy, cognitive practice, eating independently, and rest, each day bringing its own rhythm of activity and renewal. Today, I’d love to share what a typical day looks like for him, along with some reflections on why this balance is so crucial. I hope this might offer insight and encouragement for others navigating similar paths.
Morning: Starting with Care and Focus
Our morning starts around 8:00 AM with a calm routine. Breakfast is not just about nourishment but also a grounding moment where we can prepare for the day ahead. It is also a time to learn for Tobias, to repeat movement and for his brain to make the connections of moving all muscles at the right time. Perfectly coordinated so that bringing the food to his mouth, then inside his mouth to chewing and swallowing. Crazy complicated. Nevertheless, watching my grandchild Liam today trying to eat, I understand, that it will take more time. 
 

Still breakfast is calm in our house. This quiet time allows Tobias to ease into the day without feeling rushed, helping him feel centered before diving into the day’s activities.
After breakfast, Tobias has Physiotherapy at about 9:00 AM. Physical therapy helps reduce muscle tension and maintain mobility, essential for his comfort and pain management. We also are trying to build muscles, but it is a lot to fit into one hour. Today’s focus is on gentle exercises for coordination and strength, building the foundation for a day full of diverse therapies. Physiotherapy, especially in the morning, is like a fresh start for Tobias’s muscles, and it sets a positive tone for the rest of the day.
 
The Book of Mormon reminds us in Alma 37:6: “By small and simple things are great things brought to pass.” Every small movement Tobias makes during therapy is part of something greater. Each exercise, though simple, contributes to his strength, reminding us that progress often comes in small, consistent steps. Even if that means we have to do them repeatedly over and over. 
Lunch follows with a well-earned break. Tobias has about two to three therapies a day.
 
Midday: Cognitive Training and the Gift of Movement
After a short break, we focus on cognitive training at 1:00 PM. For Tobias, this involves simple but meaningful tasks. Today, we’re working on word association exercises and a gratitude list. These mental exercises may seem small, but they help Tobias engage his mind, slowly encouraging his brain to form and strengthen connections that were impacted by his injury. I also include Biology question or nature shows to pick his brain. His knowledge is still so impressive. His communication needs still lots of improvement. 
 
Around 2:00 PM (Wednesday), Tobias has his Swim Therapy session. Water therapy is a gentle yet effective way for him to exercise and feel movement in his body without strain. In the pool, Tobias experiences a sense of freedom and relief as his muscles relax, and he can enjoy movement with a reduced risk of pain or overexertion. Watching him move in the water brings such joy, reminding us, that even on challenging days, there are moments of lightness. The therapist is funny and encouraging, I toss the water ball at the end of the session, and we just forget for a moment. Tobias does not feel his body in the water the way he feels it on “land”. It must be a great feeling for him.
 
Afternoon: Balance and Gentle Activities

After swim therapy, we include a quiet outdoor walk at 4:30 PM. Time outside is therapeutic for both Tobias and me, providing a change of scenery, fresh air, and a gentle way to wind down after the day’s more intensive sessions. These walks offer a natural break that refreshes his mind and body, helping to bridge the transition from therapy back to home. Fall is such a beautiful season. 
 
By 5:00 PM, we practice relaxation and stretching together. Stretching helps manage his muscle tone, while relaxation techniques, such as guided breathing and visualization, help release any built-up tension from the day. This is a time to slow down, reflect on the day, and prepare for a restful evening. I use a few aps, one I enjoy is Calm another one is Plums village. We also have Tobias listen to calm piano music. His brain needs more erst than a healthy brain. It can burn out he also feels mor brain fog if we overload him. 
 
Evening: Winding Down and Rest
Dinner at about 6:00 PM, an important family moment. It’s not just about eating but connecting, laughing, and sharing old stories. Tobias thrives on this family time, and we use it as an opportunity to engage him in conversation, supporting his language and social skills.
In the evening, we follow a calm routine with calming music, reading, and quiet reflection on something or a nature show. The day’s experiences, both big and small, are absorbed as we prepare for rest. Tobias’s bedtime preparation around 8:00 PM is the final step in closing out a balanced day. This evening ritual creates a sense of security and consistency that is so valuable for his well-being but also for me as a mother. It gives me another chance to engage with him, in a quiet setting with no distractions. Life is so fast, often we or others don’t see Tobias effort to engage with the group, but his voice is soft, and his reactions not always in tune. That must be hard on him, but perhaps pushes him as well. 
 
Scripture Reflection: From the Bible, Isaiah 40:31 resonates with me on these days: “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” This reminds me that, though our journey requires patience, it also brings strength. Tobias’s perseverance and progress are a testament to this strength.
 
Reflecting on the Balance of Therapy and Rest

Our daily routine has been shaped by Tobias’s unique needs, balancing intense therapy with moments of calm and family connection. This structure helps Tobias feel supported yet gives him the room to rest, which is essential for recovery. It has also taught me so much about the importance of patience and pres
ence. Each small victory, each session completed, is a reminder that recovery is not a sprint but a marathon of faith, resilience, and love.
Creating a balanced routine for Tobias has been challenging at times, but the rewards are profound. We continue to celebrate every small step forward, knowing that with time, faith, and consistency, each day is a step toward greater healing. For anyone on a similar path, may you find strength in your routines and moments of peace in the journey. Never give up. You are not alone. Your father in heaven is there to help. It is hard to see his hands in our lives at times, since his plan is not always ours. Trust and you will find what you are looking for. Life is good.

A Day with Tobias: Strength of Mind Within a Weak Body

Today, Tobias was quieter than usual. His body seemed weak, and it was hard for me not to notice the subtle signs of his fatigue. But even on days like this, when his physical energy is low, his mind remains sharp and strong, full of determination. That’s one of the things I admire most about him—his unbreakable spirit, even when his body feels like it’s working against him.

A typical Saturday morning:

The morning started like many others. Tobias was lying in bed, and although I could sense his tiredness, I knew movement was essential. His body may not always cooperate with him, but without movement, the stiffness and pain only worsen. So, after some gentle massages, getting him dressed for the day, I helped him to walk from his bed to the lift. It was not as easy, I felt the burn in my arms :). His steps were slow, deliberate—reminding me of a sloth, that slow-moving creature that takes its time with every action. Tobias often looks like that, his movements unhurried and careful, as if each signal from his brain to his body takes time to reach its destination. But the effort he puts into each movement speaks volumes about his willpower. Its the moment when people get nervous, don’t know what to say to Tobias, because we all are just not used to a slow pace and quietness. That’s when I step in with my humor to stop the aquwardness. 

As we sat down for breakfast, I could see the exhaustion, his head rested forward, almost touching his stomach. But we pushed through. After breakfast, I decided it was time for a bike session, despite the heaviness I felt in my heart. His head still hung low, and I couldn’t help but feel a twinge of guilt. Am I pushing him too hard? Should I let him rest today? These thoughts run through my mind often, but I also know the consequences of inaction. Without movement, the pain in his muscles and joints increases, and the stiffness worsens. So, despite my inner conflict, I had him ride the bike and mobilized his arms, helping him stretch and move. While he was busy, I ran outside and mowed the lawn. Fall cleanup needs to be addressed, but only with multitasking. 

Complaining or choosing the alternative:

The remarkable thing about Tobias is that he never complains. (besides about pain) Even when his body is weak, and the movements must be exhausting, he doesn’t fight me on it. He just does what needs to be done, working hard to keep his body moving, even if it’s in small, deliberate motions. He accepts the challenges of his body with a quiet strength that leaves me in awe. I’m not sure I would have the same resilience if I were in his shoes.

His mind is truly incredible. 

It’s as if he’s fully aware that his body isn’t responding the way he wants, but he doesn’t let it defeat him. He keeps trying, always pushing forward, even when it seems like the world is moving against him. In many ways, Tobias reminds me of the scripture in Romans 12:2: “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

Tobias‘ body might be weak, but his mind is renewed daily by his strength of will and his unwavering faith. He understands that while his body might be broken in some ways, his spirit and mind can still thrive. And that gives him the perseverance to keep going, even when his physical abilities are still limited.

Battels via being chilled:

Watching Tobias move at times is like watching an internal battle. His brain knows what it wants his body to do, but something in the communication gets lost. He moves slowly, each step calculated, each action deliberate. It’s almost as if his body is playing catch-up with his brain, lagging behind. When I watch him, I often think of how incredible the human mind is. It can persist through adversity, even when the body falters.

One moment, he might struggle to lift his arm or move his legs, and the next, he surprises me with bursts of strength. Like when we played with the ball later in the day. Throwing and catching a ball is one of his favorite activities, and for some reason, it’s something he can still do exceptionally well. He catches the ball with strength and precision, as if this is the one task his brain and body have mastered together. Watching him catch the ball so confidently is a reminder that his strength is still there, even if it doesn’t always manifest in every aspect of his life.

Willpower – positive energy:

His love for playing catch is a testament to his willpower. Tobias may look frail on some days, but the strength he shows when he catches that ball reminds me that he is far from weak. His mind and body might not always be in sync, but he makes the best of what he has, working with what he can control and accepting what he can’t.

There’s a saying that the mind is more powerful than we give it credit for, and I see that truth in Tobias every day. His brain, though hindered by his injury, still holds immense power. It might not always send the right signals to his body, but it remains strong and determined, guiding him through his challenges with patience and grace.

2 Timothy 1:7

Tobias’ journey has been a long one, and while his body is slow to respond, his mind remains steadfast. I’m often reminded of 2 Timothy 1:7, which says, “For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” Tobias embodies this every day. He does not let fear rule him. Instead, he works from a place of love and strength, controlling what he can and accepting the rest.

A reminder for all of us:

Tobias’ journey reminds us that strength isn’t always about physical ability—it’s about the resilience of the mind and spirit. Even when life slows us down or our bodies fail to cooperate, we can still push forward with determination. The challenges we face are not meant to break us but to teach us patience, perseverance, and faith. Let us find comfort in knowing that, like Tobias, we can overcome obstacles by focusing on what we can control and trusting in a higher plan. In our slowest moments, we still have the power to move forward.

As the day went on, I continued to marvel at his resilience. Yes, there are moments when I wish things were easier for him, when I wish his body would simply obey his mind’s commands. But I also know that God has a plan for him, and that plan might look different than what I once imagined. The strength of Tobias‘ mind in the face of his physical limitations reminds me that true power doesn’t always come from our bodies—it comes from within. It comes from our ability to adapt, to endure, and to keep pushing forward, even when the road is hard.

By the end of the day, I felt a sense of peace. Tobias might have moved slowly today, his body betraying his mind at times, but he never gave up. He never stops trying.  Tobias teaches me every day that no matter how slow the progress, there is always hope, always strength, and always love to carry us through. Many times throughout the day, he ask me to pray with him. Either, he thinks of someone or it is simply due to pain. I find it odd, but then I remember, that the old Tobias might it done this, too, but perhaps alone without his mother. Perhaps praying is the better alternative to him instead not trusting in a higher power. 
 
Trusting in prayers:
 
The day Tobias had his aneurysm, I felt the world slip from beneath my feet. It was as if time itself stopped, and I found myself holding my breath, praying with everything in me that he would survive. The hours spent in the hospital were some of the longest and most terrifying moments of my life. When the doctors informed us of his condition, my heart broke into a thousand pieces. My son was alive, but he was no longer the same. Praying was my only straw for comfort and begging for miracles. Tobias might feel just like it. You might ask yourself, how did it help Tobias, he is not back where he wants to be?! You are right, but that will be a blog for another day :). 
He survived, but now Tobias lives with disabilities that have transformed his daily existence. The shock of realizing that our once-healthy, independent son now requires lots of care was overwhelming. In those early days, I didn’t know how we would manage. But what I did know was that we would never give up on him. That we will give him a chance to become independent again, after all he is a fighter. We will do our part, Tobias does his part. This is all we can do. Finding the treasures under the rubble is not easy, but we find them day by day.

 „And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope“ (Rom. 5:3-4)
 
Spiritual Guidance and Faith:
 
One of the things that has sustained me through this journey is my faith. I believe that our Heavenly Father has a plan for each of us, and while it’s not always what we want, it’s always for our good. Sometimes, the healing we seek doesn’t come in the way we expect. For us, it might not mean that Tobias will be fully restored to health, but healing has many faces and has already come in the form of spiritual strength, resilience, and a new perspective on life. Tobias is still dreaming of finishing school and having a family someday. We do not now, but we will not give up on his dreams. 
This eternal perspective — the understanding that life on earth is only a part of a much larger, eternal plan — has helped me to see beyond our immediate struggles. There are days when I question why this happened, but in those moments, I am reminded that our lives are in God’s hands. His love and grace are always with us, guiding us even when the road seems dark.
The prayers, the support from our faith community, and the constant reminder of God’s eternal love have been a source of incredible strength. I’ve learned to trust in His timing and His plan, even when it doesn’t align with my own desires. It’s this faith that has allowed me to move forward with hope, even in the most challenging times.
 
Healing in Different Ways:
 
As mentioned before, healing has come in ways I never expected. While my son may never fully recover from his aneurysm, I’ve seen healing in other areas of our lives. Our family has grown stronger, and I’ve found a resilience within myself that I never knew existed. The love, patience, and care that we pour into each day have brought us closer together, and even though the road is hard, there is beauty in the way of life. Each day feels different, each day I can see the beauty in small things, in nature, in people, especially those who want to be nice by helping me to get into the door with his wheelchair or smiling at me while I am walking with Tobias. 
 
I’ve also learned that healing doesn’t just mean physical recovery. It means emotional and spiritual healing as well. It means learning to find joy in the small moments, to celebrate progress, and to trust in God’s plan for our lives. My son may not be the same person he was before the aneurysm, but he is still my son, his humor is returning more and more. His faith is strong, his love for people is amazing. As he is learning to communicate better, he is spreading kindness and gratefulness. Every day that we have together is a gift.
 
Here is a verse from another scripture I do enjoy very much called „The book of Mormon“ 
 „My soul hath been redeemed from the gall of bitterness and bonds of iniquity. I was in the darkest abyss; but now I behold the marvelous light of God. My soul was racked with eternal torment; but I am snatched, and my soul is pained no more.“
 
Conclusion:
 
Being a caregiver to my son has been the most challenging and rewarding experience of my life. There are days when the weight of it all feels too much to bear, but then I remember the support we have — from our family, therapists, our assistant, and most of all, from God. This journey has taught me to rely on the people around me and to find strength in my faith. Life may not always go the way we plan, but I believe that every challenge we face has a purpose.
In the end, this new life, though difficult, is doable. Not because it’s easy, but because of the love that surrounds us, the grace that sustains us, and the faith that gives us hope for the future.
